PhyteGurus.com: Are you still training for MMA or just sticking to the monster workout in the gym every day?
RW: I teach several classes and am a personal trainer and wrestling coach at my son’s High School. I still train MMA and love to help out my friends (Lesnar, Carwin, Shaub, Martinez, O’Farrell etc.) prepare for up and coming fights in my spare time.
PhyteGurus.com: Which of your MMA fights sticks out as your favorite?
RW: I have many memorable fights over the years. First UFC win in 23 seconds will always be remembered. Pride fight with Kevin Randleman was a great win in front of 40 thousand people. My first Pride fight and 1st round victory over Valentine Overeem was also a big win.
PhyteGurus.com: You’ve fought all over the world, from Japan to Hawaii, Canada and even your home state of Colorado. Do you ever take your kids with you and do they aspire to be a beast in the ring just like you?
RW: My boys have seen all my fights on TV and a few of the local competitons in Colorado. They are both very good athletes and top wrestlers in the state of Colorado. MMA is going to be there decision but I would rather see them get a good college education first.
PhyteGurus.com: You’ve fought a ton of big guys being in the Heavyweight division. Out of all of the matches and fights you’ve been in, who has hit you so hard, it made you say to yourself, “Man, that guy hits hard.”
RW: It would have to be an orbital fracture I received from Rico Rodriguez the 2nd time I fought him. The right side of my face drooped for about a month. I won a unanimous decision for the WEC Superheavyweight belt the first go, so he came out swinging the second go around. We were both fighting close to the 300lb mark back then so you tend to pack a pretty good punch:-)
PhyteGurus.com: You have a TON of huge guys on Team Impact, who benches the most?
RW: Big Randal Harris who is a National powerlifting Champion has a 700lb Bench. He is one big boy! And a Natural Competitor!
PhyteGurus.com: I know you haven’t fought since 2008, is it fair to say you won’t be in the cage anymore or is there still a possibility if the opportunity presents itself?
RW: If the right opportunity comes around I would probably take it. I stay in really good shape year around and could be in fighting shape in 4-6 weeks so yes I am always open to offers and opportunities.
PhyteGurus.com: Are there any shout outs or websites/sponsors you would like to thank?
RW: I have been so blessed to have been given the gifts and abilities I have. Only one is to be credited for that Jesus Christ!!! I put my apperance’s and speaking schedule on my website www.ronwaterman.com as well as my facebook and twitter pages. I have an amazing supplement sponsor www.issresearch.com that supplies me with top supplements and nutrients.
We appreciate it and wish you all the best in your future.
